MEISHINSAI (19TH CENTURY)

Carved and assembled from several sections as Ono no Komachi seated on a weathered block of wood, her tattered flowing robes realistically rendered with deep folds and open at the chest revealing her emaciated frame. Her wrinkled face in a haggard grimace, her eyes and teeth inlaid in bone, the figure hollow to allow incense smoke to escape from her open mouth, the log inset with a metal ash cup. Signed on the underside of the figure: Meishinsai.
