HIGH PRICES ACHIEVED FOR A NEWLY DISCOVERED PAINTING BY A MASTER OF INK PAINTING AND A RARE BLUE AND WHITE VASE

The March 19 auction brought a couple of surprises.

The first of these was the price for a newly discovered painting by one of the most important masters of Chinese ink painting Qi Baishi. The painting, from the artist's late period, depicts two ripe peaches, one of the symbols of immortality in Chinese culture, which is also symbolic because the artist signed his name on the painting as a 95-year-old man. From a starting price of €55,000, the price climbed to €120,000.

The biggest price increase in the auction, however, was enjoyed by a large blue and white Kangxi period "landscape" rouleau vase. From a starting price of EUR 2,500, its price reached an impressive EUR 38,000 in the online bidding. From the same collection of the a Czech 1930's politician came a small octagonal vase in Ming style also from the 18th century (starting price EUR 4,500, achieved price EUR 8,200) and a tall light blue vase with handles decorated with chrysanthemums in shallow relief also from the 18th century (starting price EUR 2,500, achieved price EUR 7,200).

Also worth mentioning is an exceptionally high-quality bronze censer in the form of the mythical animal "Qi-lin" from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries from a Prague family of First Republic attorneys, which sold for EUR 20,500.
