Flemish School (17th century)

The central motif of this still life is a distinctive red lobster, which extends over the edge of the plate and enters into the viewer's illusionary space. Acting in contrast are the dark blue flowing drapery and partially peeled lemon. Items in these still lifes also have a symbolic meaning: uneaten food, a fragile glass goblet with wine and a laurel wreath point to human frailty and the transience of human glory.
