The pale jade vessel is supported by three low feet. The cylindrical body is meticulously carved in relief with a scene of an aged scholar and two attendants or students in a landscape, standing by a pine tree, their heads turned upwards as they observe two flying cranes. A shallow relief of mountains in the background and scrolling clouds around the rim complete the scene. The scene evokes the venerableness of old age, education, and a direct personality. Brush pots with carved decoration were generally made from bamboo or wood - a jade brush pot is exceptional. The original owner of this piece was undoubtedly very wealthy.
