This iconographic depiction of the popular goddess of mercy is intrinsically Chinese, and is generally worshipped as the giver of offsprings. The dreaming beauty is seated barefoot in the "royal ease" position above an imaginary water surface. In her right hand, she holds a ruyi scepter - a symbol of unlimited power; her left hand rests on her raised knee. Her hair is combed in even strands into a high knot, fastened with a headdress and concealed by a veil; her body is cloaked in a freely flowing robe. Her chest is decorated with a necklace with a clasp typical of the late imperial period, with a lotus blossom shaped pendant. The work is decorative yet sober, and showcases the greenish jade, a noble material which underscores the spiritual purity of the goddess. The statuette, however, also gives a sensual impression.
