Netherlandish School (17th century)

The painting depicts two sisters - Mary and Martha - visited by Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel of St Luke, Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to his words, while Martha took the role of the hostess. Christ is blessing Mary with his right hand. The artist portrays all the characters in richly pleated drapery with an attention for detail. Faces are pinkish, with sharply defined features.
