This unusual painting was most likely executed between 1620 and 1640. An interesting feature is the use of a marble slab as the base for an oil painting. The marble creates a golden background with fine grain, which brings a special mystical atmosphere to the painting and enhances the whole scene. The painting depicts Jesus placing a ring on Saint Catherine’s finger. Next to her are her typical attributes in the form of a spiked wheel and a palm branch. Also present is the Virgin Mary in typical red garment with a blue cloak and St. Joseph seated in the background.
