Austrian painter Franz Christoph Janneck specialized mainly in mythological themes, but also portraits, landscapes and religious scenes. His works are part of the collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, the Belvedere, the Brukenthal National Museum, and the National Gallery in Prague.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary as a child standing between her parents St. Joachim and St. Anne. Her mother sits on a chair and gently embraces her daughter with a loving gaze. St. Joachim stands on the opposite side, leaning against a pillar with a book. The Virgin Mary gazes devotedly towards the heavens. The colors are strong, but also very delicate and unobtrusive, while artist's great attention to detail is apparent.
