German, 14th century

Expressive carved wood head of Christ from the 14th century. His eyes are closed, his mouth slightly open, on his bloody face an expression of pain. His hair is gently parted to either side and the hairs on his beard are crinkled. His features are handled with sensitivity, but also radiate a high degree of elegance and inner peace and reconciliation with fate. Most likely it is a fragment from a statue of the crucifixion.
